Departments and ranks
Departments
Six branches. You don't have to pick one on day one. Everyone starts in the camp, and after a session or two the departments start to mean something.
Detainee Labour
CD · The prisoners
- Mandate
- The dig. Everything the site is built from comes out of the ground here.
- A shift
- Muster. Draw a tool. Walk out under escort to the Cut. Work a face for twenty minutes. Haul to the skip. Credits land.
- An evening
- Work a face in the Cut and haul spoil to the skip
- Earn credits and days off your sentence, and spend them in the commissary
- Work up to Trusty, then run a gang of four as a Ganger
- Everything the site is built from comes out of your face. Every stud of it
- Who it suits
- Everyone. It is the default role, with no barrier, and it is meant to be good enough that people choose it on purpose.
- Way in
- The boat. No application, no interview, sixty seconds from joining to holding a tool.
Facilities Maintenance
FAC · The builders and the supply run
- Mandate
- Turn what is dug into what is built, and keep it supplied. Facilities is the branch that changes the map.
- An evening
- Engineering: spend the works budget on real structures and place them on the live map
- Logistics: run the truck, work the docks, keep the stores and the commissary stocked
- Argue about the build order, which is most of the job
- Watch something you placed get walked through by a hundred people
- Sections
- Engineering & Technical E&T. Builds. Check the budget, pick a module from the catalogue, site it, place it.
- Logistics LOG. Moves. Run the truck, manage the skip, unload the supply boat, stock the commissary.
- Who it suits
- Builders, and the people who like systems, routes and being the reason everything works.
- Way in
- An application plus one of: a screenshot of something you built, or a trial shift hauling.
Security Division
SEC · The guards
- Mandate
- Count them out, count them back, and keep the camp from becoming a riot.
- A shift
- Take the gate at the Wire. Run an escort to the dig face and stand it while it works. Head count at the top of the hour. Sweep a bunk row.
- An evening
- Hold the Wire and run the gate
- Escort detainee gangs out to the face and back
- Head counts on the hour, and contraband sweeps when something goes missing
- The riot, when it comes, which it does
- Who it suits
- The largest branch, and the one most people join first. Structure, procedure and authority with rules attached.
- Way in
- An open application plus a short chat on procedure, not on lore.
Mobile Vanguard Force
MVF · The emergency team
- Mandate
- Answer the alarm. Everything else is waiting.
- A shift
- Kit check, patrol, wait. Then the alarm goes, and for fifteen minutes the Vanguard is the only thing anyone is watching.
- An evening
- Kit check, patrol the fjord, wait
- Nothing at all, most nights
- Then the alarm goes and for about fifteen minutes you are the only thing anyone is watching
- Raids, breaches, and whatever comes up out of the adit
- Who it suits
- The smallest branch, capped at ten on purpose. For people who can stand being bored for the sake of being decisive later.
- Way in
- Selection, not application. G2 in Security or Facilities with a clean record, a supervisor's nomination, and a selection op run in public. Fail and you may try again after 30 days.
Administrative Branch
ADM · The office
- Mandate
- Keep the records. Every person, number, promotion and application passes through here and leaves a paper trail.
- A shift
- Process the intake when a boat lands. Run muster and file the count. Write up an incident report. Update the works ledger.
- An evening
- Sign people in when they arrive and give the detainees their numbers
- Keep the works ledger straight so Facilities know what they can spend
- Write up whatever happened at the face and file it
- Run the archive, and decide what the Corporation admits to
- Who it suits
- People who like the paperwork of the genre: forms, stamps, redaction, numbers, filing. Also writers.
- Way in
- An open application with one writing sample: a two paragraph incident report from a prompt.
Site Command
CMD · Command
- Mandate
- Hold the story and the calendar, and make sure every other branch has someone accountable at the top of it.
- An evening
- Authorise operations and handle incidents
- Chair the promotion boards, in public, with the numbers attached
- Decide what is canon and what is not
- Hand departments to people and then stay out of their way
- Way in
- You do not apply to Command. It is where a branch director goes after running their branch well.
Not departments
The Continuum Interest (CI)
The opposition. A role you are handed for one op and take off afterwards. No ladder, no application.
Research and Containment
A real department, locked until the dig reaches something worth researching.
Founder
A permanent honour for everyone who joined before the doors. It sits beside the ranks, not on them.
